What is it?
DTS is Dolby Digital's great rival in multichannel sound. It operates at a considerably higher bitrate, which has earned it a reputation for superior quality — a point that's been debated for thirty years.
It appears mainly on Blu-ray discs and in cinema theaters.
History & origin
The company Digital Theater Systems was founded in the early 1990s, with backing from Steven Spielberg. Its first public demonstration was the soundtrack of Jurassic Park, in 1993.
Since then, DTS and Dolby have divided up film soundtracks worldwide between them, each with its own high-definition variants.
Why it is useful
A high bitrate and excellent multichannel sound, with lossless variants available on Blu-ray.
It's decoded by every home theater amplifier worth its salt.
Limits & drawbacks
Large file sizes, and inconsistent support on consumer devices and entry-level televisions.
Like AC3, it serves no purpose outside a multichannel setup.
Practical tips
Convert DTS to AAC or MP3 for listening on headphones or a phone: the track will be downmixed to stereo.
