History & origin
The Xiph.Org Foundation released Vorbis in 2000, right in the middle of the patent battles over MP3, with a clear stance: an audio format should be free for everyone to use.
It gained a strong foothold in video games, where it spares studios licensing fees, and served for years as Spotify's streaming format.
Why it is useful
Better quality than MP3 at the same file size, completely open-source and royalty-free.
It supports metadata and multichannel audio.
Limits & drawbacks
Hardware compatibility is patchy: many car stereos, sound systems, and Apple devices don't recognize it.
It has been largely superseded by Opus, developed by the same foundation, which outperforms it on every technical front.
Practical tips
If a device won't play your OGG files, convert them to MP3: you'll lose a bit of theoretical quality, but you'll gain the certainty that it will actually work.
For a new project, choose Opus instead — it has made Vorbis obsolete.
