JPEG, PNG or WEBP: how to choose?
For a photo to send, start with JPEG. For a logo with transparency or sharp text, prefer PNG. For a web publication, WEBP can be interesting: compare the size and the rendering before publication. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not restore details lost earlier.
Why does my transparent background become opaque?
JPEG does not preserve transparency. Choose PNG or WEBP when the background must remain transparent and the proposed conversion allows it. If the background is already flattened in the original file, changing the format will not remove it.
Will my Photoshop layers or my vector drawing be preserved?
A JPEG or PNG output is a flattened image. It does not retain PSD layers or the editable objects of an SVG or an Illustrator file. Keep your working file and use the exported copy for sharing. Specialized creation formats are indicated by NoLimit.
What is it?
GIF is best known for its looping animations, but at heart it's an image format limited to 256 colours. That constraint would be absurd for a photograph, yet it suits line drawings, simple logos, and basic animations perfectly well.
It supports only binary transparency: a pixel is either fully visible or not there at all, with nothing in between — hence the jagged, stair-stepped edges you see against coloured backgrounds.
History & origin
CompuServe created the GIF in 1987 to display images over painfully slow connections. It went on to become an emblem of the 1990s web.
Around the turn of the millennium, Unisys asserted a patent on its compression algorithm and began demanding royalties — a dispute that directly led to the creation of PNG. The patent has since expired, and GIF survived anyway, not because of its technical merits but because of the place it carved out in internet culture.
Why it is useful
An animation that plays everywhere without a video player, a click, or sound — it just starts on its own in any browser or messaging app.
For flat-colour drawings with a limited palette, it stays light and crisp.
Limits & drawbacks
256 colours is hopelessly inadequate for photographs: smooth gradients break up into visible bands.
A slightly longer animation produces an absurdly bloated file — several megabytes where a short MP4 clip would take up a tenth of that space, with far better image quality.
Practical tips
For a still image, skip the GIF entirely: PNG beats it on every count.
For animations, converting a GIF to MP4 or WebM shrinks the file dramatically while improving quality — which is exactly what most major platforms do behind the scenes, showing you videos even when you think you're looking at a GIF.
